How Black Film Borders Are Made Using Filed Negative Carriers

What Are Filed Negative Carriers?

A negative carrier holds your film flat in the enlarger while light passes through it onto photographic paper. Standard carriers crop the edges of the film, hiding frame lines and producing a clean, uniform print. Filed negative carriers, on the other hand, are modified by hand so the edges of the film frame are exposed during printing. By carefully filing back the carrier’s opening by hand, light reaches the full frame, printing the natural black border, also called the rebate, directly onto the paper. This is how photographers achieve true full-frame prints with visible black edges.

How Black Borders Are Printed

Once the carrier is ready, the negative is placed into the carrier, which is then put in the enlarger. Tiny adjustments control the thickness and balance of the border, and even slight misalignments create subtle, natural variations. The image is then exposed onto photographic paper. The edges of the negative print as deep black borders, while the rough edges of the filed carrier can create soft reflections and irregularities.

After exposure, the print goes through the standard darkroom process: developer brings out the image, stop bath halts development, and fixer locks everything in place. As the print develops, the black border emerges naturally. It’s part of the photograph itself.
